Melinda Fields
Melinda Fields was a family friend and trusted adult in Elliot Landry’s life who lived in a small town outside Montgomery, Alabama. She met Elliot while dating his father, Vernon “Reggie” Landry, and objected to Reggie’s neglect and favoritism toward Elliot’s older half-brother. Melinda ended the relationship with Reggie but remained close to Elliot and his mother, Jazmine Landry.
Relationship with the Landry Family
Melinda met Elliot when he was thirteen and visiting Reggie’s home. She noticed his pain, Reggie’s emotional distance, and the difference between Reggie’s treatment of Elliot and his treatment of Sean. Melinda challenged Sean’s bullying and Reggie’s encouragement of it.
When Elliot spent a painful night on Reggie’s couch, Melinda brought him over-the-counter medication after confirming what he could take. When the medication did not help, she called Jazmine for guidance and followed Jazmine’s instructions for heat, fluids, and rest. The contact began a close friendship between the two women.
Melinda later ended her relationship with Reggie because she could no longer tolerate his treatment of Elliot and because Reggie had begun threatening her safety. Melinda created and managed a GoFundMe so Jazmine could remain near the hospital while Elliot was in intensive care and the family could meet lodging, transportation, medical, and basic living costs. Her public update described Elliot’s intubation and dangerous blood clot, asked for prayers, donations, and shares, and was shared hundreds of times.
